A big boy pushed Douglas into the deep end of the swimming pool which could have led to his death. Concerns regarding bullying and ragging persists in many teenage groups. Quoting examples from the text, discuss the problem of bullying and its effects on the victims. Also suggest ways to deal with this problem (Chapter : Deep Water)

Dear Student,

Please find below the solution to the asked query:

In the story Deep Water, a big bruiser of a boy probably eighteen years old picked the narrator up and tossed him into the deep end of the YMCA pool. The narrator was unable to come out of the water. Stark terror seized him and he was paralyzed. Eventually someone saved him. The excuse the big boy gave was that he was only fooling. His brainless act could have killed the narrator if someone had not saved him. Bullying among teenagers is a fairly common thing which has been accepted by society as a norm. The survival of the fittest - this violent philosophy is entrenched in every child. One either becomes the bully or the bullied. There’s no in between position. Victims of bullying are forever traumatised and few actually ever overcome their fear. In the story the narrator is so traumatised that he becomes hydrophobic. Society needs to handle the issue of bullying seriously. An act which endangers life cannot be called foolish or a rebellious phase of a teenager. It is a crime and should be treated as one. Laws need to be set up which deals with bullying among teenagers. Proper awareness should be given to children on the harmful effects of harming someone. Violence whether physical or mental should never be taken for granted but should be dealt with severely.
