A child staying in a coastal region tests the drinking water and also the seawater with his tester. He finds that the compass needle deflects more in the case of seawater. Can you explain the reason?..................If asked for 5 mark then what all to write plz tell.
Thank u

Dear Student,
Drinking water is normally purified and contains less quantity of ionic compounds like, dissolved salts. As such, conductivity of drinking water is less. On the other hand, sea water contains large amount of salt than drinking water. So the sea water is a better conductor of electricity. This is the reason why the compass needle deflects more in case of sea water. The dissociated ions in the sea water support current through it which produces a magnetic field around it. This magnetic field apply force on the magnetic needle of compass, and thus the needle shows defection.
