A group of students wonder if pond water smells bad because it has microbes in it. Suggest the suitable hypothesis and describe a method whether it is true or false.

Dear Student,

There can be many ways to confirm that:

1) By careful observation of the water sample, means the extent of contamination, we can conclude the hypothesis to be true.

2) Take a drop of water sample and observe it under the microscope, the presence of microorganisms can be used to prove our hypothesis to some extent. Similarly, another water sample from the same location can also be used to compare.

3) May be the amount of dead matter in the sample may also reveal something about the smell/nature.
