a metal oxide contains 60% metal.the equivalent weight of metal is :-

A)12

B)60

C)40

D)24

60% metal means the oxide contains 40% oxygen.

So, 100 g oxide contains 60 g metal and 40 g oxygen

Therefore, equivalent mass of metal = (mass of metal/ mass of oxygen) x 8

   = (60/40) x 8

  = 12

  • 64

Metal oxide contains 60% metal (M) and 40% O.

Hence, 60% M reacts with 40% O to produce MO

Now, equivalent wt of O is = atomic wt / valency = 16 / 2 = 8

let equilvalent wt of M be x

40% reacts with - 60%

eq mass 8 reacts with - eq. mass x

cross multiplying, we get x = 60 *8/ 40 = 12

Hope it helps ☺
