1. The main role of the caecum is to digest plant-based food. In herbivores, the food that is digested is only plant-based whereas in the case of humans other foods are also being digested. This is the reason why herbivores tend to have a more developed caecum. The appendix is a vestigial organ that has lost its functions with time. But in ancestral forms, it served the purpose of digesting leaves and some other functions also. Again in herbivores, it serves the purpose of digesting plant-based food.

2. The enzyme salivary amylase converts the starch of chapati into simple sugars which are responsible for the sweet taste when chapati is chewed for long.
