Breathing cycle is rhythmic whereas exchange of gases is a continuous process. Do you agree with this statement? Give reason (3 MARKS)

Dear student, Breathing involves the inhalation and the exhalation of air , one cycle of the respiration comprises of one inhalation and one exhalation. The size of the thorasic cavity increases when we breathe in(inhale) and the size decreases when we breathe out (exhale). Thus breathing is a rhythmic process but the exchange of gases is a continuous process as the exchange of the gases occurs continuously between the blood and all the cells as the cells requires oxygen to obtain energy from the food. The breathing cycle involves inhalation and exhalation of air. One inhalation and one exhalation makes one breathing cycle. When we breathe in, the thoracic cavity expands and when we breathe out, the thoracic cavity contracts. Thus, breathing is a rhythmic process. But the gas inhaled reaches to each and every cell through blood. So, the exchange of gases is a continuous process as it takes place between the blood and each and every cell, by diffusion.

Hope this helps :)

The breathing cycle involves inhalation and exhalation of air due to alternate expansion and contraction of thoracic cavity. Thus it is a rhythmic process. But exchange of gases is a continuous process as it takes place between the blood and each and every cell, by diffusion.
