BRIEFLY EXPLAIN HOW RESPIRATORY SURFACE IS MODIFIED FOR MAXIMUM EXCHANGE OF GASES

Dear student,
The respiratory surface is composed of alveolar epithelial cells and the pulmonary capillary cells which are endothelial in nature. The alveoli are surrounded by the endothelial capillaries which can facilitate the process of exchange of gases by the diffusion. The alveolar sacs are highly elastic in nature and are thin, vascularised and moist which can increase their surface area for easy exchange of gases with the blood capillary surrounding it.Thus, the oxygen is exchanged with the carbon dioxide in the capillary by simple difusion process.
