Can you tell me briefly about plasmogamy, karyogamy and meiosis????

Meiosis: Meiosis is the reductional cell division in which diploid (double set) number of chromosomes is reduced to haploid (single set) number. Meiosis has two different phases – meiosis I and meiosis II. Meiosis I is reduction division which produces two haploid cells where as Meiosis II is the equational division which produces total of four haploid cells from the two resulting meiosis I cells by the process of mitosis.

During formation of male and female gametes in organisms meiosis occurs.

Plasmogamy: It is the stage of sexual reproduction in fungi in which the cytoplasm of parent mycelia fuse together without the fusion of nuclei.

Karyogamy : It is the fusion of nuclei of two cells.

Plasmogamy is a stage in the sexual reproduction of fungi. In this stage, the cytoplasm of two parent mycelia fuse together without the fusion of nuclei, as occurs in higher terrestrial fungi. After plasmogamy occurs, the secondary mycelium forms.

Karyogamy is the fusion of pronuclei of two cells, as part of syngamy, fertilization, or true bacterial conjugation. It is one of the two major modes of reproduction in fungi. In fungi that lack sexual cycles, it is an important source of genetic variation through the formation of somatic diploids.

Meiosis is a special type of cell division necessary for sexual reproduction in eukaryotes. The cells produced by meiosis are gametes or spores.
