Critically examine existing development indicators

The indicators of development existing indicators used to describe development do provide us the information about the development but that is not adequate because it doesn't provide the  sense of what development truly means.
Amartya Sen says “An adequate conception of development must go much beyond the accumulation of wealth and the growth of national product and other income-related variables, without ignoring the importance of economic growth, we must look well beyond it”.If we talk about the per capita income which is one of the indicators has many disadvantages like:
  • It does not indicate the disparities in the distribution of income. E.g. the wide gap between the incomes of extremely rich and very poor people.
  • It does not indicate long-term sustainability as non-renewable resources are liable to be exhausted.
The method of calculating per capita income also varies among countries. This, it is not highly reliable for comparisons.
The indicators of development should take into account many human aspects into consideration, for instance, economic, social, environment and political
