decapitaion is largely applied in hedge making and tea plantations .why ?

  • Removal of shoot tips is known as decapitation.
  • In higher plants, the growing apical bud inhibits the growth of the lateral buds. This is called as apical dominance. The influence of apical bud is suppressing the growth of lateral bud. Auxin synthesized in apical meristem is translocated downwards and inhibit the growth of lateral bud.
  • Decapitation usually results in the growth of lateral buds. It is widely applied in tea plantations & hedge-making. Because, tea plants and hedges should be maintained at lower height.
