An alloy is a mixture of metals that has different improved properties from the metal elements that make it.

The majority of alloys are prepared by mixing metals in the molten state. Generally the major ingredient is melted first; then the others are added to it and are completely dissolved.

Properties of iron change:

1. When small quantity of carbon added, the alloy has very-high strength and toughness (which is much higher than pure iron), and has ability to be greatly altered by heat treatment. The alloy formed is called steel.

2. By adding chromium and Nickel to steel, high resistance to corrosion is enhanced; with high heat resistant and increasing its tensile strength. The alloy formed is called stainless steel.
