) Define an alloy. How are alloys prepared ? How do the properties of iron change when : (i) small quantity of carbon, (ii) nickel and chromium are mixed with it.

An alloy Is a homogeneous mixture of two or more metals or metals and non metal.Alloys are generally made by mixing metals in molten form. When carbon is added to iron, its hardness and strength increases. When nickel and chromium are also added, its corrosion resistance and shine increases.

An alloy is a mixture of metals that has different improved properties from the metal elements that make it.

The majority of alloys are prepared by mixing metals in the molten state. Generally the major ingredient is melted first; then the others are added to it and are completely dissolved.

Properties of iron change:

1. When small quantity of carbon added, the alloy has very-high strength and toughness (which is much higher than pure iron), and has ability to be greatly altered by heat treatment. The alloy formed is called steel.

2. By adding chromium and Nickel to steel, high resistance to corrosion is enhanced; with high heat resistant and increasing its tensile strength. The alloy formed is called stainless steel.

alloys are homogenus mixtures of 2 or more metals or ametal and non metal.

it is prepared by melting primarey metal and then dissolving other metals in proportion.

iron becomes hard and strong when C is added.

it becomes stainless steel which is hard, strong and do not rust when nickel and Cr are added.
