Democracy stands much superior than any other form of government in promoting freedom and dignity of the citizens as:
  • The passion for respect and freedom form the base of democracy. It has been recognised all over the world and thus achieved by various democracies in various degrees.
  • All people need to receive respect from fellow beings.
  • Women fought long struggles to get equal treatment and respect.
  • The right to vote for women was not allowed in many democracies for long, which they finally achieved now.
  • In India, one third reservation for women is given in local bodies.
  • The claims of discriminated and disadvantages castes for equality in status and opportunity has been strengthened by democracy.

Democracy today has emerged as the most popular form of governemnt.There may be flaws in the actual practice of democracy.Democratic form of government has been questioned on various fronts that it leads to instability, it is about competition and power, gives importance to numbers, leads to delays in decision making process, even democracies track record with that of economic development has been questioned, but nevertheless democracy is the most preferred and better form of government than any any other forms for the very reason that it ensures people's participation guaranteeing them basic rights that enhances their dignity. It has done so by the following means:

a. By extending legal and political?equality to women, to the weaker sections of society, to the marginalized.

b. ?By guaranteeing fundamental rights to all.

c. Giving adequate representation to the minorities and protection through various safeguards.

d. This will give political voice to the marginalized and will increase their democratic consciousness.

e. This will?enable?women, lower casts and other?disadvantaged?groups to wage their struggle for justice,?fairness?with a legal backing.

f. By allowing people's participation in the political process.
