Edla Willmansson persuades the peddler to come home, even when to her own self she thought, he has stolen something or has run from the jail. Also she doesn't quite believe her father when he told her he's a Captain. Why does she do so?

Dear Student,

Edla is a compassionate girl, who believed in the good in others. She invited the peddler to come over to their place on Christmas eve, also, because it would be a pleasant change to have a company during the celebrations and a respite from the monotonous boring life that she led. She believed it would be good to help a stranger on the pious occasion and so she trusted in the peddler and welcomed him. She even served him meal and gave him Christmas presents. It was her kindness that made the peddler guilty of his acts and brought in him a change of heart.

Regards
