Explain face centered tetragonal unit cell.

Dear Student,

Face centred tetragonal lattice is equivalent to a small body centred tetragonal lattice.

The tetragonal system has two equal sides (a=bc) and all three angles at 90º. In the face centred lattice, atoms are arranged at the corners of the cell as well as on each face.

Please explain it with a diagram.

In crystallography, the tetragonal crystal system is one of the 7 crystal systems. Tetragonal crystal lattices result from stretching a cubic lattice along one of its lattice vectors, so that the cube becomes a rectangular prism with a square base (a by a) and height (c, which is different from a).

Ajeet I don't understand it.

Ohh ok you are talking about crystal system. But I need the value of Z and its diagram too. But I know you can't post diagram but can you explain no. of particles in it.

Consider a cube each with an atom stuck up on the centre of its face . Now the atoms inside the cube are forming tetragonal shape which needs 6 atoms .

Tetragonal shape can be determined by this

a is equal to b but b is not equal to c

angle at the joining of a and b and c is 90 degrees

It can be imagined as a matchbox with equal length and breadth but different height
