Explain Fragmentation and Regeneration

Dear Student,
• Fragmentation: Fragmentation is a mode of asexual reproduction. It is the unintentional cutting up of the body of an organism in which each grows into different organism. It is most commonly seen in some algae.
• Regeneration: Regeneration is the process where individual parts of an organism’s body have the capability to develop into a new individual. This process can be seen in many invertebrates such as Planaria, Hydra, Starfish etc (Lizard has the capability to regenerate its lost tail ).

Dear Student,

Fragmentation:
Fragmentation is a method of Asexual Reproduction, where the body of the organism breaks into smaller pieces, called fragments and each segment grows into an adult individual. Examples: Hydra, Spirogyra, etc.

Regeneration:
Regeneration is different from reproduction. For example, hydra perform regeneration but reproduce by the method of budding.Echinoderms such as the sea star, crayfish, many reptiles, and amphibians exhibit remarkable examples of tissue regeneration.
