The role played by the Parliament of India in the governance of the country is as follows.

1. Parliament is the essence of the governance system of India which is based on representative democracy. The members of Parliament are the representatives of the people. Without parliament, the system of government in India cannot function.

2. The government is chosen from members of Parliament. A government can function only when it has the confidence of the Lok Sabha, which is one of the houses of Parliament.

3. Parliament passes laws according to which the country is governed.

4. All taxes and expenditures incurred by the government has to be approved by Parliament.

5. Parliament performs the vital task of keeping the working of the executive within the boundaries established by the constitution.
