explain the 2 hypothesis of enzyme action

Dear student

Please refer the solution below for the said query

The two hypothesis for mechanism of enzyme action are: induced fit theory and lock and key mechanism.
  • Induced fit theory is a proposed theory of enzymatic function. It works similarly as the lock-and-key mechanism. The theory states the substrate induces a change in the active site of the enzyme so that the substrate exactly fits in there. Also, both the enzyme and its substrate change shape so that only specific substrate bind to the enzyme resulting in the desired products from the reaction. In the presence of the substrate the enzyme changes its conformation in such a way that the active site of the enzyme acquires the exact shape for the substrate to fit in. This results in efficient, specific and stronger binding between the substrate and the enzyme.
  • In 1894 Emil Fischer put forth the Lock and Key Hypothesis. In this hypothesis enzyme was referred as lock and substrate was referred as key. It explains the mechanisms of enzyme with specific substrate. Every enzyme has it 's own specific active site thus, substrate having the specific shape complementary to the active site will only be able to bind with the enzyme 's active site. Thus, for every substrate, their is separate key (enzyme) that can convert it into product.

Hope this information clears your doubt about the topic.
