Explain the Enabling Act. (3 marks)

Explanation

In 1933, the German Reichstag (Diet) passed a law called the Enabling Act which enabled Adolf Hitler to assume dictatorial powers.

This law gave Hitler absolute power to make laws, which enabled him to destroy all opposition to his rule.

Without the Reichstag's approval, Hitler got the right to make laws for the next four years by this Enabling Act.

Answer

The Enabling Act established a dictatorship in Germany. It gave Hitler all the powers to sideline the German Parliament and rule by decree. All the political parties and trade unions except the Nazi Party and its affiliate organizations were banned.
