Explain the features of Nyay Panchayat.

1. Nyaya Panchayat is an important institution of the Panchayati Raj System. It has the powers of local court. Though its members are elected by the Gram Panchayat only but no member of Gram Panchayat can be elected as the member of Nyaya Panchayat.
2. It  provides speedy justice to the villagers. It has more than one village under its control.
3. The nyaya panchayat has right to fine an offender but not send him to jail. These nyaya panchayats are guided by local village traditions and customs.
4. It is a fast and hassle free method of gaining justice but if the person is not satisfied he/she can appeal in the higher court.

The nyaya panchayat is like a local Court. It is an important part of Panchayat system. Its purpose is to settle minor disputes and provide justice quickly. There is one nyaya Panchayat for four to five villages. Members of nyaya Panchayat are elected by the gram panchayat. However a member of a gram panchayat cannot be a member of nyaya Panchayat.
The nyay Panchayat can pass judgement on petty, Civil and criminal cases. The members study both sides of the cake and give a ruling. The nyaya panchayat however can only impose fines. It cannot send a person to jail. The process of justice is Swift, simple and inexpensive. If a person feels that he or she has not received justice in a nanya panchayat, then an appeal can be made at Higher Court of Justice
