Explain the transport of O2 and CO2 between alveoli and tissue?

Solution:

In the lungs, the diffusion of the oxygen to the blood occurs in the capillaries then it reacts with the haemoglobin to form oxyhaemoglobin. This creates excess of H+ ions which reacts with the HCO3 -  resulting in the formation of the H2CO3, carbonic acid is unstable molecule. The decomposition of the carbonic acid results in the formation carbon dioxide which will diffuse out from the blood into the alveoli. The carbon dioxide is at last expelled from the body during exhalation while respiration.
