Give 2 examples of gender stereotypes commonly observed in Indian families?
Dear Student,
The following points may help you:
Gender is a socially constructed term that sought to create artificial division in the society between men and women. It gets reflected in the sexual division of work and in the society’s mind set
Some common gender stereotypes that we come across are:
a. Girls are told to be caring, be helping hand to their mothers, look after the house and boys are not expected to do this kind of work.
b. There are large number of female domestic workers who are employed but are given very low wages, women become targets of sexual violence, assault at the workplace.
c. Women are expected to be polite, docile, they must reflect high standards of social etiquette whereas men are expected to be independent, aggressive, bold.
d. Girls are expected to play indoors, playing puzzles, cards, setting up their doll kit, Kitchen set, help mothers in the kitchen whereas boys are expected to play outdoor activities, riding a small rider/scooter, play with cars.
e. People do not encourage girls education and prefer boys indeed.
f. People desire to have a male child rather than girl and engage in practise like female foeticide, female infanticide.
Regards
