The narrator's grandmother developed a deep bond of friendship with the sparrows who came to visit her every afternoon. She nurtured them and fed them little pieces of bread, just as she had looked after the narrator. The sparrows were her companions. The day she died, thousands of sparrows came and sat near her body. When the narrator's mother tried to feed them small pieces of bread, they took no notice. This expresses the deep bond of love and trust shared by the grandmother and the sparrows.
