Give the formula of the compound: Nitrito — N-pentaamminecobalt(III) nitrate

Dear student
Please find the solution to the asked query:

Nitrito is an ambi dentate ligand. This means that the ligand has more than one donor atom via which it can attach to the metal atom. So when it binds with N metal in the compound, N-nitro group is used(NO2)is used and when it binds with the O atom, O-nitrito is used (ONO)

Thus the formula of the compound becomes :
[(NH3)5Co(ONO)]2+ NO3-
The oxidation state of Co in this complex is +III { If x is the oxidation state of Co then ,  0 + x -1=  +2, hence x =+3}

Hope this information will clear your doubts regarding the topic. If you have any other doubts please ask here on the forum and our experts will try to solve them as soon as possible.
