Given below are three statements differentiating xylem and phloem. Which of the given differences is incorrect?
P: Xylem conducts water from the soil to the leaves but phloem carries food from leaves to different parts of the plant for storage.
Q: Both xylem and phloem has fibres and parenchyma as their elements.
R: Xylem has all living cells except xylem fibre and phloem has all dead cells except phloem fibres.
A. P
B. Q
C. R
D. None of the above

 Dear Student,

Ans. Option C is correct:
R is the incorrect statement: Xylem has all living cells except xylem fibre and phloem has all dead cells except phloem fibres.

Xylem parenchyma is the only living xylem tissue. It consists of parenchyma cells found in between the vessels and the fibres. They are primarily meant for storage of food.

The living elements of Phloem are Sieve tubes, companion cells and Phloem parenchyma.

Sieve tubes are the sieve cells which are connected end to end with perforated walls. They help in the translocation of food.

Companion cells are the specialized parenchyma cells which are found associated with the sieve tube elements of phloem. They help in the development and function of a sieve-tube element. Companion cells provide ATP, proteins, etc to the sieve-tube elements. Companion cells move sugars and amino acids into and out of the sieve elements.

Phloem parenchyma is a group of living parenchyma cells that are found in-between the sieve tubes. They function for storage of organic food.
