The selective breeding is the process in which  animals or plants with desired characteristics are chosen to give birth to offspring with the same characteristics.

The breeders are looking to produce organisms with desirable characteristics like high crop yield , high milk yield, disease resistance or high metabolism etc. This can be achieved by mating two individuals which posses these qualities. For example a cow with high milk yield is cross bred with the bull with disease resistance, the offspring produced will posses both of these qualities.
