Hi,

Why do we take the sum of the ratio given to divide a line segment

for e.g

To divide a line segment AB in ratio 2/5 we take seven points

but in making the triangle we take the ratio directly

for eg: to make a triangle with 3/5 of the sides of the given triangle we take 5 points.

Dear Student!

In case of line segment division, we add both the parts of the ratio, as we need total parts, divided into some parts. But in case of construction of similar triangles, we don't need to think about the parts. Rather, we compare one side of the triangle with the corresponding side of the other triangle, so we just take the denominator part for the comparison purpose.

Hope it helps!
