How can OCl2 exist? In ocl2 the oxidation state of O is +2, but the ncert says that oxygen shows +2 oxidation state for only OF2.Plz explain
Dear student,
Oxygen is more electronegative than chlorine. So in OCl2 the oxidation state of oxygen is -2 and not +1 since it is more electronegative. Thus, the above compound is possible.
