How can you distinguish between ethylamine and diethylamime
Dear Student
Ethylamine is primary amine that gives positive carbylamine test.
Ethylamine gives a foul odour when heated with chloroform and alcoholic KOH.
Diethylamine is secondary amine that does not give carbylaimne test.
Reaction for ethylamine is:
C2H5NH2 + CHCl3 + 3 NaOH → C2H5NC + 3 NaCl + 3 H2O
C2H5NC is foul smelling compound.
