How did EDLA came to know that the person had stolen something or had escaped from jail ,when she met him for the first time at the iron factory?

By the physical appearance of the tramp i.e, sunkeen cheeks, eyes gleamed with hunger etc. Its just like he lead a sad and a very dull life. Frm all these things EDLA came to know that the person had stolen something or escaped from jail when she for the first time met him at the iron factory.
