How do unsanitary conditions prevail due to fresh water?

Normally fresh running water does not lead to unsanitary conditions, but if water remains stagnant and clogged for a long duration, bacterial biofilms and other microbes start developing. Consumption of this water leads to the development of various intestinal disorders.
