how does the farmer selects good seeds for sowing?

Sowing: It is the process of  putting seeds into the soil for germination of seeds.

Experiment:
Take a container filled with water. Put seeds in it. Shake the container and leave it aside for sometime. You will observe that some seeds float on the surface of the water while others settle at the bottom.
The seeds which float on the surface of the water are either spoilt or eaten by insects which create holes in the seeds and allow them to float on the surface of the water. While the healthy seeds are heavy. Hence, they sink at the bottom of the container. In this way, healthy seeds are selected by farmers for sowing.

Good quality seeds are essential to grow quality crops. Farmers always select good seeds before sowing. Small or broken seeds contain less nutrients which are not sufficient for the developing seeds. Thus these inferior seeds are removed before sowing. Then these selected seeds are treated with hot water or chemicals to make them disease and pest free. Finally the seeds get ready to be sown.

Generally, farmers drown the seeds in a big bucket or tub filled with water. Then they remove the seeds which float on the surface of water as they are hollow inside and can't be used to grow that crop. They repeat this process several times untill all seeds sink at the bottom. In this way the farmer selects good seeds for sowing.
