) How is the title ?The Last Lesson? appropriate ?

  Dear student,

Sometimes even the most precious things in our life are taken for granted by us. We never think of what we would feel if they are suddenly taken away from us, what their loss would mean to us. A sudden announcement of being deprived of our language which we thought was ours, a realisation that it is the last time we would use it leaves us stunned. This is what the ' The Last Lesson ' highlights. The people of Alsace never gave much importance to their mother tongue. They did not insist that their children should give it whole- hearted attention. They did not encourage regular attendance of their children in the french class. They preferred their children to work and earn rather than learn. An order from Berlin to ban French and make German compulsory made them realise the importance of their mother tongue. They came in full force to attempt Mr. Hamel 's last lesson. The title is therefore justified as the last lesson in French is highly significant and is the central theme of the story. It shows the awakening of people to the importance of their mother tongue when it is going to be taught for the last time.
