By end of 19th century many Indians started to feel that to sow the feeling of nationalism in the crowds the history of India needs to be shown differently.
The British saw Indians as backward and primitives who are incapable of governing themselves.
In response, Indians began looking into the past to discover India's great achievements. They wrote about the glorious developments in ancient times when art and architecture, science and mathematics, religion and culture, law and philosophy, crafts and trade had flourished.This history by nationalists urged the people to take pride in the great achievements and culture of India in past  and inspired them to struggle against oppression of British.
