Life cycle of Marchantia.

Marchantia is also known as liverwort.

  • The lifecycle of liverwort starts with germination of haploid spores that produce protonema.
  • Protonema is a thread like, filamentous structure from which gametophore is produced. The male organ is known as antheridia which produces sperm cell and female organ is archegonium that produces ova or egg cell.
  • When sperm enters the archegonia, fertilization occurs.
  • Diploid sporophyte is formed after fertilization.
  • This sporophyte becomes mature and again produces spores for germination.
