The parents didnt want their child to study. They rather preferred them to work in a farm and earn money. Teachers on the other hand were not quite interested in teaching. M.hamel tells little franz that he had been at fault as well. As instead of learning the lessons he sent his students to water his flowers at home. And that whenever he wanted to go fishing he would give a holiday!.

In the last lecture, M. Hamel told the importance of learning their own language. He pointed out that most of the people of Alsace pretend to be Frenchman but they were illiterate of their language. Even the parents were indifferent towards his learning and they would prefer their sons to learn a little instead of learning the language. Blaming himself as well, he told that he himself had sent the students to water the plants. He gave them holidays because he wanted to go out for fishing.
