How would the disposal of garbage,tec., affect the living organisms inthe river?

If the garbagek, effluents of the industries , etc are dumped into the river directly into the river it reduses the oxygen storing capacity of the water thus the organisms are being affected by this .And also they sometime cosume some of it and then die .
