The narrator was shocked and saddened to see the way her mother's stuff was being used callously by the Dorlings. She felt a sense of familiarity in that room which had things she remembered as her family's, but she was horrified by the tasteless way they were decorated and by the strange feeling of oppression they were associated with. That is why, she even found her own voice different and strange in that room: it was her own familiar voice that had taken on an unfamiliar and strange undertone.
