AD is the median of ∆ABC.
 
So, D is the mid-point of BC.

 Mid point  D of BC is( 1+5 ) / 2 and (-1+1) / 2  or ( 3, 0 )  Therefore length of the median AD = ( ( 3+1)2 + ( 0 +3 )2)1/2  or AD =  5
