In India caste system is In India the caste system is one of the means of social groups division

Dear student,
The caste system in India was one of the means of dividing/categorising the society into various social groups.
1. There were four castes, Brahmins, Kshyatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras, in that order of hierarchy.
2. The initial division was based on the nature of work. Brahmins were responsible for conducting religious rites and the education of people, Kshyatriyas were responsible for military duties, Vaishyas for trade and Shudras for manual labour like agricultural work.
3. However, over time, the system became hereditary.
4. There was also a fifth group, called Untouchable, who were regarded as being outside the caste system. The Untouchables were responsible for jobs which were considered unhygienic, like cremating the dead.
