In what sense is garbage gold to the ragpickers

Dear Student,
Rag picking is the means of survival for the ragpickers. According to the author, it is their "daily bread, a roof over their heads, even if it is a leaking roof". Thus, it is equivalent to gold for them. Besides, for the children, it is "wrapped in wonder", as, at times, they chance upon "a rupee, even a ten-rupee note".
When the ragpickers find even one small coin in the garbage they would continuously look for other coins hoping to be lucky. These coins are gold to them. They seem to be a fortune for the little garbage
