is NH3 strong ligand or weak ?

NH3 is a weak ligand in general cases but in case of elements like Cobalt and few others NH3 acts as a strong field ligand and pairs up the lone pair electrons.

We can treat Nh3 more or less like a confused ligand. So actualy i dont by strong or weak in case of NH3 i go by the fact that i just need to find the ans For that I know that in coordition compouds we are mainly concerned with formation of 1 octahedral d2sp3(for coordination 6) 2 octahedral sp3d2(for coordination 6) 3 square planar dsp2(for coordination 4) 4 tetrahedral sp3(for coordination 4) 5 trigonal bipyramidal sp3d (for coordination 5 Now if u are not getting your ans in any of the above mentioned case that means you have done something wrong For eg in case of [Ni(NH3)6]2+ if we consider nh3 a weak ligand and do not pair the elcetrons we will get a sp3d2 config But if treat it as strong and do the pairing then we get dsp3d wich do not match any of our cases so here we need to treat nh3 as weak only. Incase of [co(NH3)6]3+ we get ans matching to our list if take nh3 a strong one or a weak one i.e d2sp3 in case of strong and sp3d2 in case of weak .I such case schenario take it strong, that means take it strong if u r getting ans matching to the list no matter what u consider it to be (weak or strong). I think that would solve most of the qieations i ve come accros only one prob in which it does't work lets hope u r not that unlucky in your exam Cheers!!!

Ammonia is considered as a weak ligand but when complexes of cobalt are being used it acts as a strong ligand.

According to the electrochemical series mentioned in NCERT,?NH3?is a?strong?field?ligand.NH 3 is a?weak ligand?in general cases but in case of elements like Cobalt and few others NH 3 acts as a?strong?field?ligand?and pairs up the lone pair electrons.
It depends on CMA,Oxidation state basically.!!
