The process of using a verb or an adjective in its noun form, in a sentence, is known as nominalisation.

For example, 

1. In the sentence, 

Swimming is my hobby.

'swimming' acts as a noun as it is a gerund. 

2. The verb 'broke' in sentence 1 has been converted to the noun 'breaking' in sentence 2

sentence 1: He broke my toy. So, I am upset.

sentence 2: Breaking of the toy is the reason for my being upset.
