Is that Thyroid problem in Pregnancy?

Dear Student,

Thyroid function change during pregnancy due to the influence of two main hormones: human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone that is measured in the pregnancy test and estrogen, the main female hormone. Maternal thyroid hormone is so important to the developing fetus.

Hypothyrodism

Fetus depends solely on the mother in the first half of gestation for thyroid hormone, especially thyroxine, needed for the developing brain. She added that pregnant women who are underproducing thyroxine are, therefore, at risk of having children with lower IQs and learning problems.

Hyperthyroidsm

Uncontrolled maternal hyperthyroidism has been associated with fetal tachycardia (fast heart rate), small for gestational age babies, prematurity, stillbirths and possibly congenital malformations. This is another reason why it is important to treat hyperthyroidism in the mother.

Hope this helps,

Cheers !!
