Lower BOD of a water helps reappearance of clean-water organisms.Explain (2 marks)

Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query

Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) is a measure of the amount of oxygen that bacteria will consume while decomposing organic matter under aerobic conditions. When sewage enters water bodies then microbes begin to decompose the organic materials present in this sewage. Oxygen is consumed as micro-organisms use it in their metabolism. The oxygen level in the water will then get depleted and many aquatic species perish. Then the water will become septic and polluted and gives rise to the undesirable odours. It indicates that more the organic material there is in the sewage, the higher the BOD

If the BOD level gets lowered due to reduction in organic matter, the dissolved oxygen level will increase (as microbes will decompose less now) and clean-water organisms (which were depleting) will reappear.
