Mahul has big oil refineries of HPCL, BPCL  and RCF, and is within a few miles of BARC. It is also a few kilometers from Maravali village that has over the years recorded the worst levels of air pollution in the city. The government set up thousands of transit homes for refugees and project-affected people close to these industries. After the Bhopal gas tragedy, but Mahul is an example of how we have learnt nothing. People virtually live alongside industries that handle dangerous chemicals.
The National Green Tribunal is hearing a case filed by residents of Ambapada and Mahul villages about volatile organics emissions causing a severe health impact. In 2013, KEM Hospital was directed to conduct a respiratory morbidity survey that found significant respiratory morbidity in both villages. The survey found that a majority of the population suffered from eye irritation, breathlessness, cough, and over 30 people in last six months have died of cancer.
