Let we have 'n' particles of masses m1, m2----mn respectivley, along a straight line.
Then the position of the centre of mass of the system of particles is given by
X=m1x1+m2x2------mnxnm1+m2------mn=i=1nmixiM
similarly Y=i=1nmiyiM, Z=i=1nmiziM
(ii) A rigid body is a system of closely packed particles then the coordinates of the centre of mass are then given by
X=i=1n(mi)ximi wheremi=dm=MX=1mxdm, similarly Y=1mydm, Z=1mzdm 
(iii) the centre of mass of uniform thin rod lies at their geometric centres.
