Why Flipped Classrooms Work Best For Students

Meritnation|Jul 10th, 2015 04:16pm

Here goes the traditional way students studied and prepared for exams and tests –>

Take your text books and your notebooks. Sit down and get comfortable, but not too comfortable. Read the chapters, take down notes. Avoid getting drowsy or tired. Once you are done with the textbooks, take up guides, supplementary textbooks and question banks. Study, learn, memorise and try to remember all that you are ‘reading’. You might have to do this multiple times before your Class 10 board exams or tests, since what you read will escape your brain in no time.

We have now been introduced to theNEW way to learn–>

The concept of interactive or two-way learning that has been popularised extremely fast in the current education system. Also known as a the flipped or inverted classroom setup, here the tradition of learning through books is supplemented, to a big extent, with audio visual tutorials and exercises where the students are involved in learning and responding as a practice (like gamification based exercises).

The reason it has gained popularity so fast is because it helps students learn better, much better, in less than half the time!

How exactly do flipped classrooms benefit students?

We took into account some important research studies and surveys, and here are the evident benefits of studying in a flipped classroom setup:

1. Students are not rushed into completing their syllabus

When learning in a flipped classroom setup, there aren’t any set paces at which the students study. There are visual exercises and videos which are aimed at getting students to learn what they see, hear and read. Hence, there is no hassle for students mug up faster for exams.

2. Amount of retention is greater

It is a well-known fact that students, specially of Class 9 and beyond, have a considerable amount of syllabus to cover before their exams. In such a state, remembering large amounts of information is not an easy deal. With an inverted studying setup, students learn what they experience, not just what they read. With students listening and watching the videos of topics they need to cover, they can retain what they learn for longer and better.

3. Topics can be covered in more detail

Since every chapter in the syllabus has lots of topics, students can learn every detail of the topics through the visuals they see. This way, true learning is encouraged and students can score better in their exams as well.

4. The classes can be taken any number of times

Since the classes are in the form of recorded videos and other content, students can easily refer to them whenever they need to. In case of real classrooms, it is not always possible to re-take lessons that students have doubts in. The inverted classroom setup is especially useful for students who have lots of syllabus to cover but not enough time on their hands.

5. More scope for online research and innovation

Since the medium of instruction for students is through electronic devices like computers, tablets and cellphones, students can go further than the recorded material and surf the internet for greater amounts of knowledge within a few clicks.

Meritnation.com is a perfect example of the flipped classroom setup.
