Oxygen is an essential requirement for aerobic respiration but it enters the respiratory process at the end. Discuss.

Dear student,
Aerobic respiration is stepwise catabolic process of complete oxidation of organic food intocarbon dioxide and water with oxygen acting as terminal oxidant.This is possible only if respiratory substrate is degraded step-wise enzymatically with thehelp of oxygen. Aerobic respiration requires oxygen in order to generate ATP. Oxygen is employedin the end to oxidise protons and produces water.So, oxygen acts as a final receptor.
