A respiratory rhythm is formed by a regular, oscillating cycle of breathing i.e. inspiration and expiration. The nerve impulses from the respiratory rhythm center located in the medulla oblongata travel to the diaphragm and stimulate contraction in external intercostal muscles during normal inspiration.

In the case of rapid breathing, it stimulates muscles responsible for expiration i.e. internal intercostal muscles and abdominal muscles.
