Please answer Q8

8.
A certain fuel X produced 75,000 kJ of heat on complete combustion of 3 kg of it. Another fuel Y produced 1,00,000 kJ of heat when 5 kg of the fuel was burnt completely.

a)  Find the calorific value of X and Y.
b)  Out of X and Y, which one is more efficient and by how much amount ?

Dear Student

(a)

The calorific value for a fuel = Heat released (in KJ)weight of the fuel (in kg)
So, for X :
The weight of X fuel = 3 Kg.
The heat produced = 72000 kJ
                 The calorific value of X = =72000 kJ3 kg=24000 kJ/kg
So, for Y :
The weight of Y fuel = 5 Kg.
The heat produced = 100000 kJ
                 The calorific value of Y = =100000 kJ5 kg=20000 kJ/kg
(b)

The fuel having high calorific value are considered as the good fuel.
And hence according to the data calculated for the X and Y.
The fuel X has more calorific value and X is the better fuel than Y
